1.15: 孔子学院举办中文教育论坛:对外汉字教学。俄勒冈和华盛顿州约100名中文教师参加。邀请佛蒙特大学印京华教授作主旨演讲。旧金山总领馆教育参赞邵巍博士参加。

1.28: 孔子学院与波州大国际管理研究生院联合举办的龙年春节联欢会。

1.28: 孔子学院与波特兰州立大学中国学生学者联合会和波特兰中国联谊会共同主办虎年新春迎新晚会。旧金山总领馆教育参赞邵巍博士参加。

2.4: 孔子学院邀请北京交通大学学生演出团来校演出。

2.11: 孔子学院协助波特兰新闻等机构联合在波特兰国际会议中心举办中国新年庆祝会:中国龙年春节联欢并举办汉语教材展 。

2.17: 孔院举办元宵节晚会,介绍元宵节习俗,品尝饺子和汤圆。

3.1: 孔子学院与福建俄勒冈姐妹省州协会联合举办中国经济论坛:俄勒冈-中国的经济发展与合作。旧金山总领馆总领事高占生、商务参赞夏、俄州参众议员10余人以及俄州第一夫人、波特兰港总督、俄州商务经济发展厅厅长、波州大副校长以及俄州政界和商界代表等参加了本届论坛。

3.9: 孔子学院为当地大众放映电影《孔子》。

3.12: 孔子学院和亚洲研究所共同邀请俄勒冈大学教授Richard Kraus博士作题目为:从毛时代到现在的中国艺术。

4.10: 2012年春季学期又开展了网上远程教学,向俄勒冈中小学生开设中文课程。使用的教材是国家汉办规划教材《快乐汉语》和《跟我学汉语》。由孔院汉语教师李倩和陈苏蓉主讲。

4.15: 孔子学院举办HSK/YCT网上考试,数名考生参加了各类考试。

4.27: 国际工商管理硕士专业学生 (Ryan  Reichert, Jaraswan Jarasjaruwan and  Reid Barrett) 作“亚洲之行”汇报演讲。

5.6: 孔子学院举办2012年汉语演讲比赛。68名选手分5组(小学3组、初高中和大学成人)进行比赛。

5.7: 孔子学院与波特兰州立大学其他研究所共同邀请布朗大学社会学系主任Jone Logan教授作题为“从社会主义转型的难度”。

5.11: 孔子学院邀请Heiner Fruehauf博士作题为“情绪疗法”的演讲。

5.20: 孔子学院举行HSK考试(口试和笔试),这将是孔院举办的最后一次纸考。58名学生参加了各级考试。

5.25: 孔子学院放映电影《建国大业》。

5.30: 孔子学院邀请天津青年京剧团在兰苏园演出京剧《武家坡》。

5.31-6.3: 孔子学院教师在俄勒冈州梅德福市参加俄勒冈-中国投资、旅游和贸易研讨会,并在会议期间举办了汉语教学资源展。

6.2: 研讨会期间:

1)中国天津青年京剧院在Eden Vale 葡萄酒庄园演出了京剧《武家坡》片段

2)著名中国书法家马魏华先生举办中国书法现场表演;

3)著名丝绣大师梁雪芳女士现场展出并表演苏州双面绣

6.3: 参加波州大孔院成立5周年嘉宾观看波州大孔院展板、马魏华书法表演和梁雪芳苏绣表演。

孔子学院在Smith学生中心隆重举行成立5周年庆祝活动。中国驻旧金山总领馆高占生总领事等中美两国政要出席了庆祝活动。

在庆祝会上:

1)高占生总领事、俄勒冈州议会共同议长Arnie Roblan 等中美两国政要讲话
2)天津青年京剧院演出了传统京剧《白蛇传》。

3)俄勒冈州共同议长Arnie Roblan、中国驻旧金山总领馆高占生总领事、俄勒冈州大学总校长George Pernsteiner、波州大副校长Roy Koch、苏州大学副校长张学光等为俄勒冈下设在波州大孔院的5所新孔子课堂揭牌。

4)波州大孔院邀请波特兰港务局 James Trujillo先生向波州大学生颁发了“波州大孔院-波特兰港务局国际贸易奖学金”证书;马魏华先生向波州大学生颁发了 “波州大孔院-马魏华汉字奖学金”证书。

5)举办马魏华书法展和梁雪芳苏绣展。两位艺术家现场表演书法和苏绣。

6)放映波州大孔院五周年纪录短片。

6.4: 波州大孔院组织召开美西孔子学院院长碰头会,中国驻旧金山总领馆教育处邵巍参赞和李韧竹领事参加:1)各孔院简要报告今年1月以来的活动,以及下半年即将举办的活动 2)讨论美国国务院近期拟定的公告 3)孔子学院和孔子课堂教师的签证问题 4)孔子学院如何与所在大学/大学国际交流处合作解决教师签证问题。

6.7: 应波州大孔院的邀请,中国天津青年京剧院应邀在俄勒冈州阿什兰市参加一年一度的著名“莎士比亚艺术节”,演出了传统京剧《白蛇传》。这是中国艺术家首次在美国“莎士比亚艺术节”上演出中国戏剧。

6.8: 孔子学院邀请著名书法家和汉字研究家马魏华先生作题为“中国汉字刻字邮票”和“汉字主题公园”讲座。

6.15: 孔子学院举行中国文化讲座: 端午节的由来和庆祝活动;孔院老师手把手地教授当地美国民众包粽子并请大家品尝粽子,欢度端午节。

6.17: 孔子学院举办HSK/YCT网上考试,数名考生参加了各类考试。

6.96.106.16-22:孔子学院举办第五期中小学教师职业发展研修班,邀请国内位对外汉语教学专家和美国当地本土一线教师作专题讲座及现场教学观摩。55名中小学教师参加了培训。

7.15-29:孔子学院组织29名高中生在3名教师的带领下在中国西安博迪中学和北京参加汉办2012年美国高中学生夏令营。

7.22: 孔子学院举办HSK/YCT网上考试,22名考生参加了各类考试。

9.6-10.20: 孔院在西北书院举办马魏华书法展。

9.28: 波特兰市中心本森酒店(Benson Hotel)宴会厅内宾客云集,来自波特兰和西雅图的各界华人华侨代表及俄勒冈州政界人士欢聚一堂,共同庆祝中华人民共和国成立63周年。这次国庆招待会由中国驻旧金山总领事馆主办,俄勒冈福建姐妹省州协会、波特兰州立大学孔子学院、中国联谊会及其他侨团组织协助举办。中国驻旧金山总领事高占生及夫人、俄州议会参议院主席彼特·考特尼(Peter Courtney)、众议院共同议长阿尼·罗布兰(Arnie Roblan)、地区理事会(Metro Council)主席汤姆·休斯(Tom Hughes)、俄州州长约翰·基察伯代表斯科特(Scott Nelson)、俄州前州长维克·阿提耶(Victor Atiyeh)、众议员代表丹尼斯(Dennis Richardson)、波特兰州立大学校长维维尔(Wim Wiewel)及孔子学院院长刘美如等都出席了此次招待会并致辞。孔子学院全体教师应邀出席招待会。

10.5: 孔院举行中秋联欢会。孔院教师朱菲菲介绍中秋节。参加2012年汉办夏令营的高中生作汇报。大家品尝月饼。

10.13-14: 受国家汉办/孔子学院总部委托,波州大孔院举办“2012年度国家汉办​/孔子学院总部美西地​区本土汉语教师教材培​训”。中国驻旧金山总领事馆教育处徐永吉参赞李韧竹领事、波特兰州立大学校长代表、亚洲研究所主任柯雪润教授、俄勒冈州克里斯爱德华兹(Chris Edwards)参议员、国家汉办及汉办北美地区事务代表处的官员以及中国人民教育出版社和北京语言大学出版社社长编辑等出席了10月13日上午的开班仪式。开班仪式由波特兰州立大学孔子学院院长刘美如教授主持。来自俄勒冈和华盛顿州及美国其他州各个中小学的250名汉语教师参加了培训活动。

10.12: 旧金山领馆教育参赞徐永吉会见波州大校长Wim Wiewel.

10.19: 孔子学院邀请Dan Huynh先生作题为“音乐平均律和它的发明者朱载堉”讲座。

10.21: 孔子学院举行HSK/YCT网上考试,2名考生参加考试。

10.26: 孔子学院和亚洲研究所邀请哈佛大学东亚语言和文明中心Peter Bol博士作题为“权力、财富和当代孔子”的讲座。

11.2: 孔子学院邀请清华大学翻译与跨学科研究中心主任罗选民博士作题为“中国古典文献翻译中的文化意识”讲座;邀请华东师范大学对外汉语学院院长潘文国教授作题为“为什么我们的汉语研究和教学需要一种新理论?”的讲座。

11.2: 波州大孔院举办“保罗范思乐奖学金”和“马克斯宾色饭店”奖学金颁发仪式,三位波州大学生获得奖学金。中国驻旧金山总领馆毕刚副总领事和李韧竹教育领事参加了仪式。两项奖学金的捐赠者Mel Gurtov教授(保罗范思乐奖学金)和 Alix and Wei Nathan夫妇(马克斯宾色饭店奖学金)向获奖者颁发了奖状。

11.3: 孔子学院邀请圣母大学中文研究教授、2012年文学诺贝尔奖得主莫言小说的翻译者Howard Goldblatt博士作题为“美国的当代中文小说:几点想法”的讲座。

11.3-4: 由国家汉办、波特兰州立大学孔子学院和清华大学翻译与跨学科研究中心共同主办,波特兰州立大学孔子学院承办的第二届亚洲太平洋翻译与跨文化研究论坛暨中文教学研讨会在波特兰州立大学举行。来自十多个国家和地区的80余位代表参加了大会。中国驻旧金山总领馆毕刚副总领事和李韧竹教育领事到会祝贺并发表主旨讲话。

11.11: 孔子学院举行HSK/YCT网上考试,4名学生参加考试。

11.13: 孔子学院邀请漫画小说家David H.T.Wong作题为“淘金热:北美华人历史图解”的讲座并售书。

11.15: 孔子学院举办讲座:“日本和中国的人口变化与经济发展”

Jan.15: Chinese Education Forum: Character Teaching in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.

Jan.28: Chinese New Year celebrations with PSU students of the Master of International Management program.

Jan.28: Chinese New Year Gala: Evening party celebrating Chinese New Year of the Dragon jointly sponsored by CI, CSSA and CFAP at PSU. Counselor Shao Wei of Chinese Consulate in San Francisco attended the event.

Feb.4: Performance by Beijing Jiaotong University student troupe.

Feb.11: Chinese New Year Gala at Oregon Convention Center: celebrating Chinese New Year of the year of the Dragon sponsored by CIPSU and Chinese communities in Portland. CIPSU also held a Chinese teaching resource exhibit at the gala.

Feb.17: CIPSU hosts a jiaozi and tangyuan party to mark the Lantern Festival. A CI teacher made a presentation introducing the festival and all participants were invited to tast jiaozi and tangyuan.

March 1: CIPSU co-sponsored the Chinese Economic Forum jointly with Fujian-Oregon Sister State Association. Consul General Gao Zhansheng, Business Counselor Xia, several state representatives, the Fist Lady of Oregon, Director General of Port of Portland, Head of Department of Business Development, Oregon, Vice President of PSU and VIPs in the political and business circles of Oregon attended the forum.

March 9: Chinese corner and Chinese movie: Confucius.

March 12: Lecture: China’s Art: from Mao to Now by Dr. Richard Kraus, professor of University of Oregon.

April 10: CIPSU initiated online Chinese teaching to school students in Oregon by CI teachers Li Qian and Chen Surong, using textbooks Happy Chinese and Learn Chinese with Me. 

April 15: Online HSK/YCT tests.

April 27: Presentation by MIM students (Ryan Reichert, Jaraswan Jarasjaruwan and Reid Barrett) on the trip to Asia.

May 6: The 2012 Chinese speech contest with a total of 68 contestants in 5 groups.

May 7: Lecture: The Difficulty of Transition from Socialism by Dr. John R. Logan, Professor of Sociology and Dean of Sociology Department, Brown University. 

May 11: Lecture: Healing through Emotions by Dr. Heiner Fruehauf. 

May 20: The last paper based HSK tests at CIPSU (both oral and written tests) with 58 test takers.

May 25: Chinese corner and Chinese movie: Founding of the Republic.

May 30: Peking Opera performance: the Hero Is Back by Tianjin New Generation Peking Opera Troupe at Lansu Chinese Garden sponsored by CIPSU.

May 31-June 3: The 2012 International Conference on Oregon-China Investment, Culture, Education and Tourism in conjunction with the PSU Confucius Institute’s 5th Anniversary Celebration, China Trade Fair, Chinese Teaching Resources Exhibit, Art Exhibition, Calligraphy Exhibition and Demonstration, and Soochow Embroidery Show and Demonstration.

June 3: Guests to the Gala viewed the CIPSU exhibition boards, Calligraphy Exhibition and Demonstration by Ma Weihua and Soochow Embroidery Show and Demonstration by Liang Xuefang.

A gala to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the establishment of CIPSU was held at the PSU Smith Student Center. Present at the event were Gao Zhansheng, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco and other Chinese and US VIPs.

At the gala:

  1. Consul General Gao and other VIPs made a speech;
  2. Tianjin New Generation Peking Opera Troupe performed the traditional Peking opera the Story of the White Snake; The Hero Returns, etc. at the CIPSU’s 5th anniversary gala, at the Lan Su Chinese Garden, at Oregon Shakespeare’s Festival in Ashland, Oregon
  3. Arnie Roblan, co-speaker of Oregon, Consul General Gao and others unveiled plagues for the 5 newly established Confucius classrooms;
  4. Mr. James Trujillo of Port of Portland presented certificates of CIPSU-Port of Portland International Management Scholarship to PSU students, and Mr. Ma Weihua presented certificates of CIPSU-Ma Weihua Chinese Character Scholarship to PSU students;
  5. Ma Weihua Calligraphy and Liang Xuefang Soochow Embroidery exhibits were held; and
  6. A documentary for the development of CIPSU in the past 5 years was shown.

June 4: CIPSU organized a CI director meeting of the CIs in the northwest part of the US. Counselor Shao Wei and Consul Li Renzhu from the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco attended the meeting. At the meeting:

1) CI directors reported their events and activities since January, 2012 and their planned events and activities in the second half of 2012;

2) Effects of the recent directives of the US State Council was discussed; 

3) Issues concerning visas for CI and CC teachers was discussed; and

4) Directors exchanged ideas on how to work together with the universities/the international offices they belong to to solve the visa issues effectively.

June 7: At the invitation of CIPSU, Tianjin New Generation Peking Opera Troupe participated in the annual Shakespeare Festival at Ashland, Oregon and performed the traditional Peking opera the Story of the White Snake. This is the first time for Chinese to perform at the Shakespeare Festival.

June 8: CIPSU hosts lecture by Ma Weihua, a famous calligrapher, on Collection of Chinese Character Stamps, the Art of Engraved Porcelain and the Design of Chinese Character Theme Park

June 15: CIPSU hosts a zongzi party to mark the Dragon Boat Festival. A talk on the festival was given and participants were invited to taste zongzi.

June 17: CI hosted online HSK/YCT tests.

June 9, June 10, June 16-22

The 2012 CIPSU Summer K-12 Chinese Language Teacher Training Program was held at Portland State University sponsored jointly by CIPSU and College of Education PSU. 55 K-12 Chinese language teachers from Oregon and Washington State participated in this year’s training. Nationally- and internationally-known teacher training specialist, professors and K-12 teachers were invited to teach and work as trainers.

(The forms of training include lectures, PPT presentations, seminars, teaching demos, teaching practice and class discussions and hands-on teaching and observing. Consul Shao Wei from the Chinese consulate in San Francisco awarded certificates to all the participants. )

July 15-29: 29 high school students from Oregon participated in the 2012 Summer Camp for American High School students sponsored by Hanban in Xian Bodi School and Beijing led by 3 chaperons.

July 22: CI hosted online HSK/YCT tests with 22 test takers.

Sept.6-Oct.20: CIPSU hosted Ma Weihua Calligraphy Exhibit at Northwest Academy

Sept.28: Consul General Gao Zhansheng of Consulate General at San Francisco and his wife hosted a reception at the Benson Hotel, Portland to mark the 63rd anniversary of the founding of PRC. Oregon-Fujian Sister State Association, CIPSU, Portland Chinese Association and other Chinese communities and organizations co-sponsored the reception.

VIPs speaking at the reception were: Consul General Gao Zhansheng, Peter Courtney, Chair of the House of Representatives, Arnie Roblan, co-speaker of Oregon, Tom Hughes, Chair of Metro Council, Scott Nelson, representative of Governor John Kitzhaber, Victor Atiyeh, Ex-governor of Oregon, Representative Dennis Richardson, Wim Wiewel,PSU President and Dr. Meiru Liu, CIPSU Director.

All CI teachers were invited to the reception. 

Oct.5: CIPSU hosted an event to mark the moon festival. CI teacher Zhu Feifei gave a presentation on the festival. Students of the 2012 summer camp gave presentations and performance.

Oct.13-14: Entrusted by Hanban/Confucius Headquarters, CIPSU hosted “Hanban/Confucius Headquarters Teaching Material Training Program for Northwest US Local Chinese Teacher”. Counselor Xu Yongji and Consul Li Renzhu from the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco, Prof. Sharon Carstons, Director of Asian Studies Institute representing PSU president, Oregon Senator Chris Edwards and officials and editors from Hanban and Chinese publishing houses were present at the opening ceremony on the morning of Oct. 13 chaired by Dr. Meiru Liu, Director of CIPSU. Around 250 school Chinese teachers from Oregon and Washington participated in the training.

Oct.19: Musical recital: the Musical Equal Temperament and Its Inventor Zhu Zaiyu by Mr. Dan Huynh.

Oct.21: CI hosted online HSK/YCT tests with 2 test takers.

Oct.26: Lecture co-sponsored by CIPSU and ASPSU: Power, Wealth and Confucius for Today by Dr. Peter Bol, Charles H. Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages & Civilization at Harvard University.

Nov.2: Lecture: Cultural Awareness and the Translation of Chinese Classics by Dr. Luo Xuanmin, Director of the Center for Translation and Interdisciplinary Studies at Tsinghua University. Lecture: Why We Need a New Theory for the Study and Teaching of the Chinese Language by Prof. Pan Wenguo, Dean of School of Chinese for Foreign Students, East China Normal University.

Nov.2: CIPSU awarded CIPSU’s D. Paul Fansler Scholarship and Mark Spencer Hotel Scholarship to three PSU students. Mr. Bi Gang, Vice Consul General and Ms. Li Renzhu, Consul of Education at the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco were present. Scholarship donars, Prof. Mel Gurtov and Mr. and Mrs. Alix & Wei Nathan presented the scholarship certificates to the winners.

Nov.3: Lecture: Contemporary Chinese Fiction in America: Some Notes by Dr. Howard Goldblatt, Chinese study professor at Notre Dame University and translator of novels by Mo Yan, winner of the 2012 Literature Nobel Prize.

Nov.3-4: The Second Asian-Pacific Forum on Translation and Inter-Cultural Studies & Symposium on Chinese Pedagogy co-sponsored by Hanban, China, the Center for Translation and Inter-disciplinary Studies at Tsinghua University, Confucius Institute at PSU, was held at Portland State University. Mr. Bi Gang, Vice Consul General and Ms. Li Renzhu, Consul of Education at the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco were present at the conference and Mr. Bi Gang delivered a speech. More than 80 delegates from over 10 countries and regions participated in the conference.

Nov.11: CI hosted online HSK/YCT tests with 4 test takers.

Nov.13: Lecture and book sale: Escape to Gold Mountain: a lecture on Chinese immigration to North America by the graphic novelist David H.T.Wong.

Nov. 30: Oregon-Tianjin Relations Forum” held at Portland State University sponsored by CIPSU, Port of Portland and Oregon-Fujian Sister State Association to explore possibilities in exchanges and cooperation in economics, business, education and tourism and establishing sister state relations between Oregon and Tianjin. It was co-sponsored by Tianjin TEDA Representative Office in Dallas and Business Oregon & NW China Council

Dec. 16-18: CIPSU Director Meiru Liu, Co-Director from Soochow University Wu Xiaoyuan attended the 7th CI Global Conference in Beijing

Dec. 24-25: At the invitation by Vice President Jiang Xinghong of Soochow University, CIPSU Director Meiru Liu visited Soochow University and met with Vice Presidents Jiang Xinghong and Zhang Xueguang, Dean of International Education and Exchange Huang Xing and Lu Huixing, etc. Both sides held friendly discussions on future collaborations between CIPSU and SU.
