Title: A New Era of Wealth & Power: Lessons from Modern Chinese History (Book Discussion)

Abstract: The recent book Wealth & Power: China's Long March into the 21st Century by Orville Schell and John Delury explores modern Chinese history through the lens of one recurring theme: regaining wealth and power after being humiliated by Western imperialists. The book tells the story of Chinese leaders struggling to rebuild China after fallen dynasties, wars, and colonial aggression over the past 150 years. Although they lived through different times and tribulations, they were all driven by the same principles of wealth and power. What implications does this deep-seated notion from ancient Chinese legalism have on China today?

Lauren Patton is a Master of Urban and Regional Planning candidate who is about to graduate this summer.  Lauren is one of the five China interns this summer, and she will be working in the Beijing China Academy of Urban Planning and Design. She is relocating to China with her husband and will not be returning to the U.S. for at least a year or two, so this internship is her first stage of a longer China adventure.
